We celebrate this National Women’s History Month by remembering Ellen Richards. MIT has come a long way since the day it opened doors to Ellen, while achievements of generations of MIT alumnae continue to pave the way.

Ellen Swallow Richards was the first woman admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and notably the first woman in America accepted by any school of science and technology. With a bachelor of science degree, she established a women’s laboratory at MIT and was the first female instructor teaching at the institute.

But she didn’t stop there.

When Doug Spreng accepted the MITCNC president’s role last year, he set in motion three major initiatives to drive interactions between the Northern California MIT alumni and the institute. Entrepreneurship, young alumni outreach and stronger connection to MIT are the strategic building blocks to enable an evolving MITCNC community that keeps pace with the technology transformation initiated at MIT and commercialized by MIT entrepreneurs—many are young entrepreneurs.

I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with our new club president, Doug Spreng. In his four years serving the club, Doug’s contributions include the founding of the Energy & Clean Tech Series. Under his leadership, this program has grown from a few events per year to eight speaker/panel discussions with six tours of energy related facilities.  In collaboration with Larry Kelly, a chairperson for Band of Angels’ Special Industry Groups, Doug has recently initiated the Pioneers of Clean Technology speaker series – kicking it off with a sold-out “Tesla Motors from Day One” presentation by its co-founder, Marc Tarpenning.

In this interview, Doug shares his vision and mission for MITCNC, along with key initiatives to accomplish them.
